  • It’s a chance to hone your project management and leadership skills to achieve a high level of mastery in your field too, paving the way to a diverse and rewarding career path in the bank and beyond

What you'll do

Payments are the heartbeat of our bank. We process one in four payments in the UK every single day – that’s 2.5 billion electronic payments and 3 billion card payments, along with cash, cheques and electronic transactions too.

But the way we pay for goods and services is changing – and so are customer expectations. Our customers expect to make simple, safe and speedy payments at a time and place that suits them, and the pandemic has only reinforced those expectations and accelerated the digital transformation of the payments industry.

It's this backdrop that makes Payments Technology such an exciting place to work. And as our Principal Java Engineer, you’ll find there are endless opportunities to work alongside other exceptional technologists to solve cutting-edge technical challenges and engineer innovative payments solutions for our customers.

Day to day, you’ll be:

  • Involved in our most critical programmes of work, including ISO20022, Swift GPI, SEPA and payment schemes like CHAPS and BACS
  • Shaping our Payments Technology strategy and contributing to the future vision of our Payments as a Service model
  • Providing technical leadership and supporting our software engineering teams to plan, develop and deploy high performing, robust and resilient applications that follow excellent architectural and engineering principles
  • Harnessing your knowledge and experience to implement new functionality and build enhancements, modifications and corrections to our existing software
  • Monitoring technical progress against plans while safeguarding functionality, scalability and performance

The skills you'll need

We’re looking for an experienced full stack developer to join us in this role, with a broad mix of expertise and knowledge, particularly in Java 8 or higher.

You’ll bring a genuine passion for your discipline too, and a desire to continuously advance our engineering capability as an influential member of our engineering community.

You’ll also need:

  • Technical proficiency in Spring Boot, MongoDB, Kafka, Spark, Team City and Jenkins
  • Significant experience building Cloud-based platforms, software and microservices using PCF, GCP or AWS, and Kubernetes, Containerisation Docker and service orchestration
  • Experience of working with low latency data streaming and big data platforms or data lakes
  • A track record of creating, designing and contributing to the development of application architecture
  • The ability to clearly articulate the benefits of a sound and disciplined approach to solution design, and coach and train others on the solution design process and best practices
