Whatever life throws at you

We all need a helping hand sometimes.

Ros Heath, Branch Manager, Penzance: This benefit has meant so much to me over the years.

Tracy Thomson, Loans Officer: Pretty much transformed my life.

Jon Goss, Release Train Manager: And it’s something that makes me extremely proud to work for the bank.

Text: We all need a little help sometimes

Jon: We found out on 20th June last year that we were expecting. It was definitely nerve-racking. The biggest concerns we had were around how much time would we have together as a family.

Tracy: I had a real crisis of confidence. I loved the job I was doing, but I just didn’t feel I was confident.

Ros: The day arrived that I never thought would arrive – I was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer. Within a week, I had my critical illness insurance paid out, which took the pressure off wondering where, you know, the next bill was going to be paid.

Ros: It allowed us to have the deposit to move to a house away from the city.

Jon: My daughter decided to arrive three and a half weeks early. We could get a secondment in to cover my job, so we could do a full handover.

Jon: It meant I could almost drop everything and go and give them all my attention, and we didn’t have to worry about juggling work and being together as a family.

Tracy: The support that I got from NatWest through the Peppy app and the specialists was life changing. I actually understood and knew what was wrong with me. It wasn’t that I was losing my marbles. I was going through the menopause.

Ros: The bank actually supported me with being off work sick for six months. They gave me access to counselling, various other support networks. It made such a difference.

Tracy: My health has improved. I’ve become the sociable person that I was, and have the confidence to continue in the job that I love.

Jon: Those six months off were incredible. I was there for all those important early milestones, like when she started to roll or she started to sit by herself. Those are the moments that really matter. It gave me that chance to build an amazing bond with my daughter. It shows such incredible focus on wellbeing.

Tracy: I felt like I was being listened to as an individual. I have now not only got my health, but I’m also protected for the future, too.

Jon’s story

Hear from Jon what taking six months on the birth of his daughter meant to him.

Jon Goss, Release Train Manager: This is our first child. We found out on the 20th of June in 2022, that we were expecting. We had our first scan on the 16th of August, and we got to hear the heartbeat for the first time on the 7th of September.

Jon: We’ve been told by many family and friends – don’t worry if you only have a few weeks or so off, you’ll always make it work – we did, but I now knew we had at least 6 months off, I was on full pay, I could support my wife. We knew that we had all this time as a family, we could make the plans, we could go on holiday.

Jon: It also meant from a work perspective, we could get someone in as a comment to cover my job for this period of time I was off, and we could do a full handover.

Jon: That became really beneficial as my daughter arrived 3 and a half weeks early, and we could basically drop everything. Also as I knew my job was covered, I didn’t have to worry about that; it meant I could really truly enjoy my time off.

Jon: I think it’s incredible, and it’s something that makes me extremely proud to work for the bank, and it gave me that chance to build an amazing bond with my daughter. I could go and teach her to swim, I could attend the parent and baby classes, I could support my wife, and make sure that we both could enjoy it by making sure neither of us was really exhausted.

Jon: I was there for all those super important early milestones, like when she started to roll, or starting to sit by herself, or learn to swim.

Jon: They’re the moments that matter, and I got to do it together with my wife, and it brought us all closer together, and built those early amazing bonds. Those 6 months off were amazing, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Ros’s story

Hear how critical illness cover helped Ros look to a brighter future beyond cancer.

Ros Heath, Branch Manager, Penzance: Hello there. My name’s Ros Heath. I am the branch manager of the NatWest in Penzance. I have been the branch manager for the last ten years, and I’ve been with the bank now for almost 24 years.

Ros: When I joined the bank, I had the opportunity of taking out one of the physical wellbeing benefits that the bank offer. I took out the critical illness insurance. However, at the time I was only about 23, 24 when I took out the benefit. Never, ever thought I would have an occasion where I might need it or use it. But I really thought it was too good an offer to miss.

Ros: When I was 32, I was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer and needed to have various treatments chemotherapy, radiotherapy, etc.. It was only a passing comment where somebody said, Have you claimed on your critical illness insurance? Which I hadn’t thought of because at the time I was dealing with everything else.

Ros: However, I phoned up the bank, and I was so amazed that within a week, I had my critical illness insurance paid out. But not just that. They gave me access to various counselling, various other support networks. I had a cancer specialist nurse available on the telephone to answer any questions and to help me should I need it. It made such a difference.

Tracy’s story

Hear how support from Peppy helped Tracy get her confidence back.

Tracy Thomson, Loans Officer: Hi, I’m Tracy Thomson, loans officer for NatWest Social and Community Capital.

Tracy: The NatWest benefit that has helped me the most through the menopause has been the Peppy app, and this has been life changing.

Tracy: The menopause support that I got, allowed me to continue to do a job that I absolutely love and I’m really good at. It also gave me the confidence to raise this with the doctor, that there was something wrong with me and I knew now, how it could be fixed. And that support came from the specialists on the Peppy app.

Tracy: The menopause support that I got impacted my life in so many positive ways. I got my confidence back. I loved the job I was doing, but I just didn’t feel I was confident in doing the job, and thought I might have to find something else.

Tracy: My health has improved. I’ve not got the pains that I had. And I’ve become the sociable person that I was. And this has been at least a year now that I can see a difference in the person that I was and was becoming, to the person that I am today.
